Yahoo! User Interface Library is an open source javascript library made for creating AJAX based rich user interface. For example, yahoo mail is created using this! Therefore you will understand how powerful it is.

Basically YUI library is a set of components which supports different kinds of web applications. These components are divided up into few categories.

Control/Widgets

Container Components(Panel, Dialog, Tooltip)

UI Widgets(Button, Calender, Menu)

Components which communicate with Serverside module.

Event handling and DOM Components

Controller for animation, drag & drop, page layout

All the components are sourced out in 3 ways, normal, with debugger, extracted.

jQuery and YUI are both good library; However, there are some parts much easier for each. Therefore, we should be able to use one of them completely so that there will not be any problem because both of them can do pretty much same thing except that they have to be implemented in different ways

Google Apps Engine is one of the service from Google and it can develop web application using Java or Python and execute it on Google’s infrastructure and able to maintain versions.

Google Apps Engine can only use API which supports Python or Java so right now there are only few of the functions available.

Big Table

HTTP requests

e-mail

pictures

caching

cron

XMPP communication

O ther service allows to do more than this.

In my opinion, I would think both got good strength but it might be better learning ruby on rails instead of google apps engine for being able to work in broad view.

Side Note…

Reasons why Google Apps Engine is chosen…

Easy to get Started
App Engine is a complete development stack that uses familiar technologies to build and host web applications. With App Engine you write your application code, test it on your local machine and upload it to Google with a simple click of a button or command line script. Once your application is uploaded to Google we host and scale your application for you. You no longer need to worry about system administration, bringing up new instances of your application, sharding your database or buying machines. We take care of all the maintenance so you can focus on features for your users.

Automatic scalability
For the the first time your applications can take advantage of the same scalable technologies that Google applications are built on, things like BigTable and GFS. Automatic scaling is built in with App Engine, all you have to do is write your application code and we’ll do the rest. No matter how many users you have or how much data your application stores, App Engine can scale to meet your needs.

The reliability, performance and security of Google’s infrastructure
Google has a reputation for highly reliable, high performance infrastructure. With App Engine you can take advantage of the 10 years of knowledge Google has in running massively scalable, performance driven systems. The same security, privacy and data protection policies we have for Google’s applications applies to all App Engine applications. We take security very seriously and have measures in place to protect your code and application data.

Cost efficient hosting
App Engine will always be free to get started, and you can purchase more computing resources, paying only for what you actually use. Detailed pricing for usage that has exceeded the free quota of 500 MB of storage and around 5M pageviews per month.

Risk free trial period
Not only is creating an App Engine application easy, it’s free! You can create an account and publish an application that people can use right away at no charge, and with no obligation. An efficient application on a free account can use up to 500MB of storage and up to 5 million page views a month. When you are ready for more, you can enable billing, set a maximum daily budget, and allocate your budget for each resource according to your needs.

Ruby on Rails is a OpenSource Web Application Frame Work. Like it says in the name, it is written in Ruby. Also it is created based on structure of MVC(Model View Controller). It is made to lessen the number of codes within the framework when working with the application.

Rails’ basic idea is “Don’t Repeat Yourself” and ”convention over configuration.” They mean that have it finish only once and have a convention more to reduce configuration of the application.

Ruby on Rails’ MVC Structure is,
Model: In Rails, we use Model Class through Active Record.
View: it just a logic of codes which display the result in the screen by inserting some HTML codes in the application
Controller: It is done by using Application Controller Class in the Action Pack.

I think this is useful for many of people who is trying to make a new web application. It is free too!

There are certain things that might be helpful improving the assignment. The most problem that people faced was that they had to send to the server request and store in information to the xml. Because we haven’t learned any technique that we can use in class on sending post information to the server, I will suggest some website which might help improving your assignment 1.

There are few that we can use on the server which are cgi or PHP but I will suggest php because it is simple to use. However, it might not be easy setting up which I had trouble on VM.

PHP Websites – this is where you download php

http://php.net/index.php

Wikipedia for PHP – quick overview of it

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PHP

W3C School for PHP – this is where I learned my php this term

http://www.w3schools.com/PHP/DEfaULT.asP

PHP Builder – best resource for php

http://www.phpbuilder.com/

In my opinion, jquery is only useful designing the websites cause functionality is not that useful.

JSON stands for JavaScript Object Notation and it is a text based data format like XML. Like its name, JSON is a subset of JavaScript’s object notation syntax and compared to XML, it is able to describe structured data concisely; therefore, description is simple and able to understand easily.

For XML, all the meta data must be enclosed with a tag. On the other side, JSON only need like a square bracket and braces. JSON have less types than XML so if the creator indents properly, it is able to read easily.

Also XML doesn’t settle on picking data types or its use, purpose, and meaning in meta data so interpretation is obscure. Because of this it is a problem when using programming language which uses strict data types. However, in JSON we are able to add data type in Object, list, strings and numbers so it can insert strong typing information in instances.

Atom publishing protocol is a application level protocol which edits contents or resource on web such as blog or wikipedia. Using this and the application which supports this, we are able to cooperate with database or software on desktop and mobile devices like mobile phones. This protocol is a HTTP based communication protocol and is based on REST’s architecture style. Also a format which is commucated is based on Atom Sydication format’s xml documents.

Today I will introduce WYSIWYG Editor, “TinyMCE.” However many of you may not know what that WYSIWYG Editor is. Although I like Dreamweaver more, there are many of you who needs to make Website without using expensive editors.

WYSIWYG stands for “What You See Is What You Get” and it basically allows to get what you want without writing tags or codes. Like I am editing this on wordpress might be a good example.

TinyMCE is one of WYSIWYG Editor which is 100% Javascript HTML editor on web, but it can be stored onto desktop also. It is an open source, Licence LGPL. As you can see on its website, http://tinymce.moxiecode.com/index.php, it features with attribute sucha as Easy to integrate, Customizable, Browserfriendly, Lightweight, AJAX Compatible, International and Open Source. Being able to add pluguins such as MCFileManager and MCImageManager, files and images will be easier to be added.

http://tinymce.moxiecode.com/examples/example_01.php this should allow to change the HTML tag into editor.

In 14th of January, 2009. jQuery 1.3 was released.
These are the main differences:

Selector Engine has been changed into Sizzle.
jQuery’s CSS selector engine has been changed into Sizzle. This engine was created by John Resig who is also the creator of jQuery. It is also made to be used in other JavaScript Libraries.
Sizzle’s future goal is to be fastest, expandable and standalone.

Live Events implemented
There is a new event handling implementation called “Live Events.” Before event was binded to match the elements when listener was registrated. In Live Events, document monitors all of the events and it matches with the registered selector when event rises and distinguish what to do and execute listener.

jQuery Event Object implemented
Model of event handling has been widely altered. For example, there is a bubbling process which wasn’t handle before. It is followed by a model which is advised by W3C recommendation.

HTML operation process has been innovated
Elements such as added, replace, and delete has been written from scratch. This helped to have 6 times the previous performance.

Retrieving Offset process has been renewed
Offset function which finds where elemet has been written from scratch. This helped to process faster and made performance 3 times better.

Depending on the Browser, the behaviour is earned at once
Before in order to solve this problem, jQuery.browser was used. Therefore, there exist a logic: ”if using this kind of browser, it should have this kind of behaviour so it needs this kind of special process.” However, in jQuery.support, it doesn’t need to look for what kind of browser and this kind of behaviour. Therefore, jQuery.browser is duplicating but it is used in many plugin so it is not going to be deleted.

Recently there’s JavaScript Library called jQuery which is getting popular between the users in the web. JavaScript is used to manipulate functions in a Application such as browser. There are many other JavaScript Libraries; moreover, the most popular one is prototype.js Library which was diffused as a Ajax Library. It uses one of JavaScript Language’s characteristic which is expansion in language, and added useful functionality in standard objects. However, prototype.js‘s biggest advantage to expand the language has some abuse in there. There might be a dysfunction in the program because method might be added existing object.

Nevertheless, jQuery does not need to expand JavaScript Language. Therefore, there’s no need for unexpected dysfunction in the program. Also prototype.js has lots of functions within, for its library size has to be large.

One of the characteristic in jQuery is that there’s not repeating description. In general, many object or element on page needs a loop to control. However, jQuery does not need it; therefore, program will be lot shorter and decrease bugs.

I recommend using jQuery for people who are better at designing rather than programming.

Some people say that anyone could use jQuery if you can use CSS. Other than that fact, its source is very small in size, cost of learning is small and has high functionality.

There are many online storages in the web. From those, I will introduce Skydrive and Google Docs.
Difference between these two are quite large because they are two different kind of online storage.
Google Doc is more focused on saving smaller file while SkyDrive allows large files in the storage.

Spaces:
SkyDrive can take 25GB of free storage.
Google Doc doesn’t specify the data amount instead they said “Each user has a combined limit of 5000 documents and presentations and 5000 images, and each user has a limit of 1000 spreadsheets.”

File Types:
SkyDrive allows any file type extension.
Google only allows HTML, .txt, .doc .rtf, .odt, .xls, .csv, .ods, .tsv, .tsb, .ppt, and .pps.

File Sizes:
SkyDrive allows up to 50MB for individual files
Google Doc allows 500k for documents, embredded image can be 2MB and presentation can have 10MB. “Spreadsheets can be 10,000 rows, or up to 256 columns, or up to 100,000 cells, or up to 40 sheets – whichever limit is reached first. Each spreadsheet can have up to 20,000 cells with formulas.”

Sharing:
SkyDrive should be able to share many people as possible.
Google Doc can share a file up to 200 people and spreadsheet is unlimited.

Collaboration:
SkyDrive doesn’t have real time online collaboration
Google Doc can edit a file up to 10 people at anytime and spreadsheet is 50 people at same time.

Uploading:
SkyDrive can upload five file at once
Google Doc only allows one-by-one.

I can’t say which is better or which is not because they both have strength in some situation but if I was going to suggest to my classmates, I would recommend Google Doc for education purpose.
